Plan

Read about Plan's work in Sierra Leone and the cooperation with KJAER & KJAER through 10 years.

...."The advantages are many!"

This is an interview with Mr Mustapha Baion, Procurement and Supplies Coordinator, Plan International at Sierra Leone 2012.

KJAER & KJAER:

How long has Plan been working in Sierra Leone?

Mustapha Baion:

Plan has worked in Sierra Leone since 1976.

KJAER & KJAER:

What are Plan’s main activities in Sierra Leone?

Mustapha Baion:

We work in 3 areas:

  • School Programs: We build schools in deprived areas; we provide materials, water and sanitation to the schools with a special focus on women and girls

  • Health and sanitation with medical programs for communities. We buy and distribute bed nets and malaria drugs and we also buy and distribute water pumps.

  • Income generating programs. With micro finance loans, people can get a loan from Plan’s fund and start their own business or pay for education

KJAER & KJAER:

Who are the people benefitting from Plan’s activities in Sierra Leone?

Mustapha Baion:

Well, I benefit from Plan’s activities, because I work for plan and so do my colleagues.
But the people who benefit the most are the children and the communities. We help children, but we cannot help the children without helping also their parents and the communities – so they benefit too.

KJAER & KJAER:

Your fleet is composed of a large number of motorcycles – why this composition?

Mustapha Baion:

Well we work in very remote areas and the driving conditions are extremely rough. The off-Road motorcycles allow us to go everywhere.

KJAER & KJAER:

This Plan and KJAER & KJAER are celebrating their 10 years of corporation - and during the past 10 years Plan Sierra Leone has purchased many motorcycles from KJAER & KJAER.

Which Honda model has been your preferred one, and why?

Mustapha Baion:

Our preferred model has been and still is the Honda XL125. It is a very tough off-road motorcycle which is a must to cope with our extreme driving conditions.

  • Studies show that wearing reflective clothing reduces risk of an accident by 37%.

KJAER & KJAER:

Does road safety play an important role in relation to your daily work, - which is already faced with many other challenges?

Mustapha Baion:

Yes, very much! For instance our people are not allowed to take vehicles or motorcycles out of the office premises after 18:00 for safety reasons. We do not want our people to drive at night.

KJAER & KJAER:

How would you describe your working relationship and cooperation with KJAER & KJAER?

Mustapha Baion:

It as been great! They always respond promptly to my emails and they have trust in Plan International.

KJAER & KJAER:

In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing an international supplier like KJAER & KJAER?

Mustapha Baion:

The advantages are many!
First of all we are sure that we get high quality products both on motorcycles as well as on spare parts.

Secondly we get lower prices than what we can get locally. When we need large quantity we can be sure that KJAER & KJAER can supply because they work with big stocks in a few locations.
KJAER & KJAER has a high credibility and that is also important towards our donors.

The disadvantage is that sometimes we need the motorcycles very quickly within the coming week or so. The international distributor cannot deliver that quickly, for instance KJAER & KJAER need 3 weeks to ship motorcycles from their stock in Antwerp to Freetown.

But when we have time to wait for such a delivery – we wait so we can work with KJAER & KJAER!
