When the mobile library visits the village, it puts a smile on children’s – especially girls – faces

Plan International has worked in Timor-Leste since 2001, helping children and youth to access their rights to education, health, livelihoods and protection.

“The lack of school readiness contributes to the existing challenges of students repeating grades or dropping out of school at primary levels. School readiness can be increased through quality pre-school education”

Dillyana Ximenes, Country Director, Timor-Leste

Pre-school education is still new in Timor-Leste. Plan International works towards giving all children up to the age of six access to quality and sustainable early learning and stimulation services.

Children in Timor-Leste, especially those in rural areas, rarely have access to storybooks and children’s toys, especially educational toys. The mobile libraries visit communities on a weekly basis, building literacy, confidence, awareness of child rights and creating fun. It is no wonder; when the mobile library comes to the village, it puts a smile on children’s – especially girls – faces!
